A Message from our Head of School Regarding Recent Events in Israel

May 12, 2021 | 1 Sivan 5781

Dear Barrack Community,

The Barrack school community is deeply committed and connected to Israel.  We are blessed to have many who have family and friends there now.  As tensions and attacks increase, we reaffirm our solidarity and support for the State of Israel, and we pray for calm and peace to be restored and that no more lives will be lost.

As we continue to monitor the situation in Israel, we pray for those under attack who, upon hearing the red alert siren time and again, have to keep running to their bomb shelters. We pray for the active soldiers, some of them our own school’s alumni, and the 5,000 Israeli reservists called up to safeguard the country. In our Shacharit services, we offer prayers for the State of Israel and for peace.  As we do with significant stories in the news, especially those about Israel and the Jewish people, we are spending time in our classes dealing with this complex and swiftly changing situation. We are discussing the Jewish value of Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh Ba Zeh | כל ישראל ערבים זה בזה — All Israel is responsible for one another — as we express our support for those who are undergoing these harrowing and dangerous times.

As we affirm how the Israelis have the right to exercise power, we are working, in appropriate grades, to present why the different actors involved are coming from the perspectives that they do. Our teachers are using an array of materials including those coming from Center for Israel Education ( Newspapers | CIE) and Unpacked for Educators Sheikh Jarrah: The Story Behind the Story • Unpacked for Educators
For everyone involved, join me as we invoke a prayer to end the violence:
וְכִתְּת֨וּ חַרְבֹתֵיהֶ֜ם לְאִתִּ֗ים וַחֲנִיתֹֽתֵיהֶם֙ לְמַזְמֵר֔וֹת לֹֽא־יִשְׂא֞וּ גּ֤וֹי אֶל־גּוֹי֙ חֶ֔רֶב וְלֹא־יִלְמְד֥וּן ע֖וֹד מִלְחָמָֽה
“[T]hey shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”

As the situation unfolds, please continue to talk with your children, as we will continue to do. Let us all pray for safety, an end to the violence, and for the peace that has eluded the region for so long.
