Dear Friends,
Thanks
to our outstanding student athletes and coaching staff, our fall season has
ended on a triumphant note. Our boys' varsity soccer team captured the
Tri-County League Championship title for the second straight year in a row. We are
also proud of seniors Gabe Duec, named Athlete of the Week this week by The Main Line Times for his outstanding soccer record and are pleased to announce that Gabe and Tal
Ben-Maimon were selected to the All-Tri-County League. We
congratulate the entire team and their coach Jerry Kleger.

Hats off, as well, to our girls' varsity
soccer team on an undefeated season in Tri-County League play and to their
coach Kim Gillio. Our co-ed Middle
School soccer team also enjoyed their most successful season to-date. Coach Larry Benek did
an outstanding job working with the team on building their skills and team
spirit, while assuring that they had fun playing the game.
On the tennis front, senior Shoval
Dorani ended her singles tennis
career at our school with a two-league play perfect record of 58-0. Look for
her profile in our next Benainu
and her salute to tennis coach Mike Mooney.
Our cross country team, coached by Jerry
Washington, got off to a running
start and continued to enjoy success. In the Tri-County Championship meet, sophomore
Ezra Solway completed the 3.1 mile
course in a time of 18.07 to finish in third place among all the competitors,
and sophomore David Kolansky
finished right behind him with a time of 18.23 seconds to finish in 5th
place.
As we approach our winter sports season,
we know that all of our student athletes and their coaches understand that
playing sports at our school is all about representing Barrack with pride,
winning with humility and losing with dignity, because when all is said and
done not many people will remember the final score, but they will remember that
our students and coaches played the game the way it should be played.
As the new Athletic Director at Barrack,
I would also like to thank the school administration for all their support. I
look forward to having an opportunity to get to know many of you in the months
ahead and to sharing more athletic news with you.
Sincerely,
Mitchell Kline

Director

Editors Attend Conference in NYC
|
Twelve student editors of Barrack Hebrew Academy's
various publications - Cougar Chronicle, M'et L'et and Gateway
- along with publications advisor Mrs. Rony Cohen and
Technical Advisor Mrs. Stephanie McHugh, participated in the
Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference at Columbia University on
November 2. The conference is a yearly event that brings together young high
school journalists from all over the USA to meet with writers, journalists and
technical specialists in the area of photography, graphic design, layout and
Web publishing. It is amazing to meet so many young people with similar
interests, so serious about their craft, and dedicated to their publications. Many
are planning a career path in writing and journalism, art and photography, and
find inspiration in the seminars. The conference offers five blocks of 15-20
sessions at a time and the editors choose which session they would like to
attend in any given block. Our Barrack group included students in grades six
through 12. They represent a wide range of interests and attended a multitude
of sessions on how to publish a book, write poetry, and organize an editorial,
as well as explored ideas about writing, photography, photo shop, InDesign, and
Web publishing. During lunch and
on the bus ride home, they shared their experiences and ideas for future implementation
in our publications work.

Barrack Students Attend AIPAC High School Summit
|

Eight members of Barrack's Israel Club attended the
AIPAC High School Summit in Washington D.C. this week. The students stayed at
the Grand Hyatt Hotel, along with 400 other pro-Israel students representing 22
states across the nation. Barrack students attended sessions led by AIPAC
speakers and staff, outlining how
AIPAC works to maintain the American-Israeli relationship and how the students
can get involved. Our students also toured the Capitol Building, the Senate and
the House of Representatives. On Monday evening, the D.C.-based comedy group Capitol
Steps performed for Summit attendees. "This high school summit was truly an
incredible experience for our students," shares club advisor Oded Philip. "It inspired
them to work with all Israel Club
members to assure support for Israel."

HEAR THIS: Never Again!
|

Barrack Hebrew Academy's Holocaust Education, Action
and Reflection (HEAR) Club members have invited all students, faculty
and staff to create tiles that will form a memorial wall at the school in
memory of those who perished in the Holocaust and serve as a reminder that it
is remembrance, awareness and personal responsibility that gives credence to
the cry of "Never Again." The students and club advisor Mrs. Susan Schwartz are
working with art teacher Ms. Laura Lyn Stern to create
the tiles and locate an appropriate space within the school to create the
memorial wall. "We want our fellow students to remember the Holocaust, of
course," shares Arielle Belfer, HEAR Club president, "but we also
wanted to provide them with an outlet for their feelings and a way for them to
express these feelings in the realm of art."

For Life. Cradles and Crayons Thanks Barrack Students
|
As part of last week's Middle School Chesed Day, our 6th graders volunteered at
Cradles to Crayons, a non-profit organization that provides, clothing, toys,
equipment and school supplies for children and families in need. This week, we
received a thank you letter. Excerpts follow:
A sincere thank you from all of us
here at the Giving Factory for the great work of Barrack Hebrew Academy's
volunteers on Wednesday, November 4.
What a difference a few hours can make!
By the end of your shift, volunteers from Barrack had sorted hundreds of
articles of clothing, created many clothing packs, cleaned over 200 toys and
several equipment items and generally processed enough children's items to help
us provide essential to dozens of kids in need.
It was the dedication, hard work and
good humor of Barrack's volunteers that made it all possible, and we can't
thank you enough for giving up a sport of your day to give back.
We, at Barrack, are very proud of all
our Middle School students, administration and faculty members who helped to
make our community a better place on November 4.

Grandparents/Grandfriends' Day
|
Over 100 grandparents and grandfriends joined us for
our second annual Grandparents and Grandfriends' Day on November 6. They had an
opportunity to meet our administration and faculty, attend classes with their
grandchildren and grandfriends, enjoy lunch as our guests in the dining commons
and have a photo taken. Our guests thanked us for a special day and commented on
the exceptional quality of our programs, facilities, administration, faculty,
staff and students. Look for Grandparent and Grandfriends' comments that will be
posted on our web site soon. Their responses let us know that a Grand day was
certainly enjoyed by all.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I would like to extend my gratitude to the whole Barrack community: the
administrators, the entire faculty and school families.
Your support over the past weeks, and especially during the week of shiva, was heartwarming. To be surrounded by genuine care
and love helped me and my family go through this painful time.
יהי זכרו ברוך. May my
husband's - Rabbi Joshua Toledano - memory be for a
blessing and may we only get together for happy occasions.
בברכה בתודה
