Dear Friends,
Barrack Hebrew Academy's college
preparatory mathematics curriculum is designed to help our students calculate
success in school, in college, and in life. We educate students to think critically, logically and
independently and to integrate their math skills across the curriculum, in
their extracurricular activities, and in their everyday lives.
In addition to teaching classes that
range from Pre-Algebra, Algebra, to Geometry in our Middle School and from Algebra
to BC Calculus in our Upper School, the Math Department offers students
opportunities to enjoy math beyond the classroom.
Middle School students put the power of
mathematics to work in Math Counts, with Mr. Philip Lachenmayer, and in the Math Club, with Mrs. Marlene Gefter. In each group, students work on solving non-routine
problems as they discuss strategies with their advisor and with each other. The
Math Counts web site also offers additional problems of the week.

Approximately five times during the
year, we offer the Pennsylvania Math League (PML) contests to Upper School
students who enjoy tackling challenging contest problems. In the spring, our
advanced students compete with students throughout the country in the American
Math Competition (AMC.) Those with a high enough score to qualify can advance
to the next competition, the American Invitational Mathematics Exam.
Math and science acumen take center
stage in our Barrack JETS Club (Junior Engineering Technical Society) Club, where
Mr. Frank Tow, the club's math
advisor, joins forces with Mrs. Kathleen Saltz, the club's science advisor, to provide students with
the skills needed to solve complex applied math and engineering problems. Last
year our JETS Team placed first in the State and ranked third nationally.
Our overall goal is to have Barrack students
graduate with an appreciation of the power and beauty of mathematics, a
discipline that will continue to influence and enrich many facets of their
lives for years to come.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Judy Shrager

Israel Club Proudly Welcomes Israeli Leader, Effie Eitam
|
Members of Barrack's Israel Club, advised by Oded Philip, had the honor of introducing Israeli leader Effie
Eitam to Barrack students and faculty in two assemblies held this Thursday. Mr.
Eitam served in the Knesset from 2003-2009 and is also well-known for his
military career, having reached the rank of Brigadier General in the Israel
Defense Forces (IDF.) He received a Medal of Distinguished Service for his
service in the Yom Kippur War. He also participated in the daring rescue
mission, Operation Entebbe, in Uganda. Mr. Eitam currently serves as a Security
Advisor to Israel's Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. He is touring campuses
across America. The tour is supported by the Jewish National Fund.
Mr. Eitam held our Middle School and Upper School students
transfixed as he told personal stories about his work in a special
counter-terrorism/hostage rescue unit of the IDF. You could have heard a pin drop as he recounted his part as
second in command in the rescue of Jewish hostages in Entebbe, Uganda in 1976.
Central to Mr. Eitam's message is that Israel is a beacon to the rest of world
Jewry.
After his talk, Mr. Eitam stayed for a spirited question and answer
period with interested students. He also praised our student body for their
commitment to, and knowledge of, Israel and for their intelligent comments. Mr.
Eitam invited students to stay in touch with him via his blog and email.

Chanutiyah Opens to Enthusiastic
Welcome
|
The officers of Barrack's Student
Association saw an opportunity to help classes raise funds, as well as satisfy
student requests for a Chanutiyah - a "store" serving tea, hot cocoa, coffee and snacks at break to
assuage hunger pains. The Barrack Chanutiyah debuted in the dining commons on Tuesday of this week
to an enthusiastic welcome. Students and faculty chose treats from an array of
goodies, including bagels, muffins, brownies, cookies, chips, tea, coffee and
hot cocoa-all at reasonable prices. "Each day a different grade will man the Chanutiyah,
and the profits gleaned from all
sales will be split evenly among the classes," explains Jackie Retig '10, SA
secretary. "And SA worked very hard
to make the goodies affordable."

For Life. Alumni Spotlight: Exploring Beyond the Horizon.
|
This past summer, Yosef Razin, a junior at Princeton University and an Akiba-Barrack
Alum, class of 2007, worked at the Subaru Telescope in Hilo, HI. The telescope
is Japan's premier optical-infrared instrument operated by the National
Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Located on Mauna Kea on the island of
Hawaii, the telescope, with an effective aperture of 8.2 m, is also one of the
world's largest and most technologically advanced telescopes.

"I worked on the Subaru Coronagraphic
Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCEXAO) Project at the Subaru observatory," shares
Yosef. "The SCEXAO module will be installed in the spring of 2010 to upgrade
the image-taking capabilities of the telescope. It was exciting to work with
one of the most sophisticated deformable mirror systems in the world. It will
provide the ability to directly image planets and planetary formations disks in
other solar systems. Due to its extremely high contrast ratios and fine
resolution, it will provide us with the ability to explore the inner part of
planetary systems and further our chances of discovering earth-like planets
outside of our solar system."
Specifically, Yosef was doing
opto-mechanical design of the SCEXAO bench and set up of alignment procedures
for the different elements of the coronagraph (i.e. module.)
"I
learned a deep appreciation of science from my teachers, including Mrs.
August and Mr. Dougherty," shares Yosef. "They
inspired me to explore beyond the horizon."

Building a Better Mousetrap |
 Members of Barrack's 12th
grade Introduction to Engineering Class participated in Widener University's
Mousetrap Engineering Competition on October 21. The competition called for the design
of a vehicle, powered only by a mousetrap that could travel around a circular
course without touching the walls. "In order to accomplish this, our students
went through the design cycle that engineers us to create new products,"
reports Mrs. Kathleen Saltz,
science department faculty member. Each group improved the performance of their
device through designing and building multiple prototypes, applying such
scientific concepts as torque, rotational inertia, friction and Newton's laws
of force and motion.
Another more down-to-earth set of skills
the students learned was how to navigate their way around a machine shop. They
learned how to use hard tools and power tools to construct their devices. Integrating
writing skills, they wrote an engineer's technical report around the vehicle
they designed. Technical writing is a skill they will carry with them
throughout college and, in many cases, throughout their careers.
One of Barrack's teams, consisting of Oryan
Howard and Asaf Rothschild, were finalists in the Mousetrap Engineering
Competition and placed fourth out of the 23 teams competing for three trophies.
Following the competition, the students toured the Engineering labs at Widener,
where featured professors shared lively presentations on many different fields
of engineering. Barrack students
witnessed demonstrations of water treatment systems, an experiment in
vibrations in structures, tensile strength changes in plastics, chemical
engineering applications for collagen beads, and a room-sized wind tunnel.
