A NEW CHALLENGE

Dear Friends,

As you know, an anonymous donor has challenged our parent body to support Barrack's Annual Fund. Our donor has agreed to contribute up to $5,000 to match new contributions from our parents for this year.

In addition to this challenge, a second challenge has been made by PEJE (Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education). At its annual conference in October, PEJE will recognize those schools that achieve 100% giving by constituencies such as the Parent Body and the Board. We are proud to report that our Board will be recognized at this event. Not only has the Board achieved 100% giving, but it has also exceeded the amount raised last year by 43%.

To date 40% of the parent body has contributed to the Annual Fund. We can do better! Every dollar raised touches the lives of our students in enriching ways and expands learning and extracurricular opportunities.

The greater community, currently a main source of our annual fund dollars, looks to those closest to the school to lead the way on Annual Fund contributions. To encourage you to make an Annual Fund gift, I would like to add a third challenge to the latter two. I challenge each grade in the school (6th through 12th grades) to a contest to try and reach 100% parent participation.

Every gift will count, regardless of size.
Gifts of $50 and over will meet our anonymous donor's challenge.

The statistics per grade, thus far, follow:
  • 6th Grade = 34%
  • 7th Grade = 41%
  • 8th Grade = 44%
  • 9th Grade = 32%
  • 10th Grade = 53%
  • 11th Grade = 37%
  • 12th Grade = 39%
An increase in participation is a win-win for your students, your grade and for JBHA. To contribute online click here.

You also can pledge or contribute over the phone by calling Ruth Mancuso at 610-922-2330 or by sending a check to: Barrack Hebrew Academy (to the attention of Ruth Mancuso), 272 South Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010.

We look forward to your support and will keep you posted on the class challenges.

Sincerely,
Susan W. Marks

6th Graders Do What the Egyptians
And Romans Did: The Papyrus Project

Students in Judith Pransky's sixth grade class capped off their studies of ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations via hands-on projects. This week, students used hieroglyphics to decorate their handmade sheets of papyrus tablets and added their birth dates in Roman numerals. Next week, based on their studies of ancient Greek and Roman times, the sixth graders will present original board games to the school community. The influences of ancient civilizations live on!

The Language of Film: Part II

Dr. Andrew Douglas from the Bryn Mawr Film Institute visited Tom McLaughlin's elective on film for the second time on May 28. He addressed the topic of summer blockbusters. The class had voted on what topic they would like to learn about, and this was the overwhelming favorite. Andrew Douglas talked about the influence of the counterculture movement of the late 1960s, on the psychology of film audiences, and the inevitable creation of movies such as Jawsand Raiders of the Lost Ark. For the former, he showed several trailers and discussed the cultural ramifications of the film. For the latter, he showed several clips and demonstrated the influence of an earlier age by comparing a chase scene to one from a 1930s Zorro vehicle. "For our final class meeting, we will watch portions of Jaws, as we eagerly prepare for our summer vacations at the beach," shares Mr. McLaughlin, "and decide for ourselves whether it is safe to go back into the water!"
Self-Discovery: Memoir Writing

Members of Hallie Anderson's 11th grade English classes are working on the Memoir Project, a personal writing assignment in which the eleventh graders chronicle important moments and realizations in their lives in language that reflects their fresh and unique voices. The classes use a Workshop format to do teacher-led peer editing of the memoirs, discussing how to contour narrative flow, fortify tone and deliberate on language choices in the effort to "show, not tell." "Students are able to take ownership of the events that have shaped their identities and will be able to transform the assignment into the root of their college essays, comments Ms. Anderson. "We are learning how to write in a new way, a more personal way," shares Jordyn Horowitz '11, "and to define those experiences in our lives that helped shape who we are today. Our memoirs also provide a jumping off point for writing personal essays, a skill we will need next year when we apply to college." Joshua Stein '11 agrees, adding: "This project helped improve our writing in general, and the peer reviews were very helpful. In the process, we learned a lot about ourselves and each other."

Rebecca Herzberg '10 Wins AFA Scholarship

Congratulations to Rebecca Herzberg, a Barrack senior, who was awarded a college scholarship from the Alzheimer Foundation of America. Becky earned a top award in the Foundation's college scholarship contest for her poignant essay about her beloved grandfather, Zayde Joe, a Holocaust survivor who later in life suffered from Alzheimer's disease and died in 2008.

Becky remembers her grandfather singing to her in Yiddish, especially the song You Are as Beautiful as the Moon, and sharing his stories with her. Then the grandfather she knew began to disappear when he was afflicted with Alzheimer's and could no longer remember the songs or recognize her. As he suffered, so too did his extended family.

"It is important to raise awareness about Alzheimer's, so a cure can be found," shares Becky who will enter Tufts University in the fall where she plans to study political science. She wants to acquire the skills she will need to lobby for various issues, including finding a cure for this debilitating disease. She ends her essay by saying: "I hope one day another grandfather will actually remember telling his granddaughter that she is sheyn vi di levone - as beautiful as the moon." The "Scoop": Girls' Lacrosse Team
The Barrack Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Team, comprised of 22 girls in grades 8-12, capped off their first season of interscholastic play by earning 3rd place in the Tri-County League Championships. Seven schools compete in this league. The team's achievement is impressive, considering that only one team member, sophomore Danielle Levin, is an experienced player. Dani's passion for the game spearheaded the formation of the girls' team at Barrack.

Sue Dotsey, a former Division I Women's Lacrosse player from Old Dominion, became the team's coach just as the 2010 spring season was about to begin. The entire team worked very hard to learn the skills necessary to compete as varsity lacrosse players and build their skills. This is a young team, and they will continue to grow and learn together. In fact, a number of the girls will attend lacrosse clinics this summer and in the fall.

The 2010 Varsity Girls' Lacrosse season ended last week, with 3 wins for Barrack and some very close, high scoring losses against Kimberton, Perkiomen and Delaware Valley Fiends. With the great coaching they are receiving from Coach Dotsey, and the fantastic season they had this year, everyone is expecting some really "BIG" things from the team next season.
For Life.

What Our Young Alumni Tell Us...

"Vanderbilt is great! I am doing well and can attribute much of that success to my study skills and writing skills. The amount of time our teachers helped us learn how to write well was remarkable. My Akiba-Barrack education also taught me that going to professors for help and advice is very beneficial. Teachers at Vanderbilt are very welcoming, just like my high school teachers..."

In the Spotlight:
Annual Fund Gifts
Have a "Dramatic"
Effect in Many Ways

From our award-winning drama productions to cutting-edge technology, contributions to Barrack's Annual Fund enrich the lives and expand opportunities for our students and leave them All Shook Up! and very "animated."

Two cases in point: Barrack's stellar Upper School musical, All Shook Up! took center stage at St. Joe's Bluett Theatre, May 30-June 2. "What a great cast and orchestra! What an amazing, professional production! One of the best high school shows we have seen!" were some of the comments overheard as members of Barrack's extended school community and the community at large left the theatre.

Each year, the drama department, under the direction of Dewey Oriente-Cassidy, presents five productions: the repertory play; the Upper School drama, directed by a student; the Middle School musical; a Cabaret; and the Upper School musical. Annual Fund dollars supplement ticket sales and playbook ads to support the stellar quality of each production and enable the students on stage and behind-the-scenes to "follow their dreams." A number of Barrack graduates go on to pursue careers in acting, script writing, theater direction, and stage production.

Drama students are not the only animated ones at our school. Back in the technology lab, newly purchased software and lessons with Stephanie McHugh and Brett Rudolph, Barrack's IT team, inspire students to create their own Web pages, design Websites, produce videos, photo shop, and add animation that brings their creativity to life and adds depth and sophistication to their class assignments and presentations. With the latest technology tools at their fingertips, Barrack students are well-prepared to meet the demands of the 21st century's digital world. Every Annual Fund contribution, no matter the size, expands a world of opportunity for our students and makes a positive difference.
