Dear
Friends,
Record breaking snow fell the weekend of February 5th and 6th
and that is what most people in the Delaware Valley will remember from the winter
of 2010. I am going to remember the amazing Shabbaton weekend I
shared with over 25 families participating in the first Barrack Hebrew Academy Family
Shabbaton.
Friday evening started out with candle lighting that illuminated the Barrack
Dining Commons and a lovely Kabbalat Shabbat service led by our special guest,
Sam Glaser. We were singing Shalom Alechim
just as the first snowflakes began falling Friday evening, and we all knew this
was going to be an exciting and fun-filled weekend. The dining commons
served as both our dining room and our Shul.

Our Saturday morning service was led by two of our parents, Yossie
Rothman and Freyda Black. We had a few families even brave the storm
and come back for Saturday services and lunch. With anticipation of the
concert featuring Sam Glaser, planned for Saturday night, we realized the treat
was ours alone to enjoy. The State of Pennsylvania issued a state of
emergency, which meant only emergency personnel were allowed on the roads.

Our first Barrack Shabbaton Weekend was amazing; the school community in
attendance represented the full spectrum of Jewish observance. Dr.
Brown, Head of School, and Ariele
Klausner, Board President, were also in
attendance. The families attending the whole Shabbaton occupied 18 of the
school's hotel rooms, and the students and their siblings slept chaperoned in
the library and classrooms.
As Shabbat ended, the snow stopped falling. We did Havdallah and then Sam
Glaser treated us all to an amazing concert. The concert was held in the auditorium
and lasted 1 ½ hours. Sam usually plays to a much larger audience, but on
Saturday night he performed a private concert just for those families attending
the Barrack Shabbaton.
I want to thank my co-chair Francine Lipstein; our Sam Glaser Concert co-chairs, Nancy Black and Tracy Gordon; HSA officers Robin Batoff and Linda Kriger; Max & David's; George Shotz and Sarah Waxman; and
all the families for their participation in this fabulous weekend.
Sincerely,
Lori Levin Barrack Parent and Shabbaton Co-Chair

For Learning. Water
Summit Tackles
Real Problems;
Presents Real Solutions
|
How do you
conserve water, a precious natural resource that is in short supply throughout
the world and judiciously manage its supply? For answers, ask the members of Barrack's
12th grade AP Environmental Science classes who held their First Annual
Summit:
Water Management--Everyone's Problem this week. The Summit culminates a
year-long project that began with analyzing the water in Darby Creek on the
school's campus. The water was polluted. Tracing its flow, the students
realized that it flowed through Pennsylvania, into the Delaware Water Gap and
eventually into the oceans of the world. The questions of water pollution,
scarcity, and management were therefore local, national and international ones,
begging for answers and wise management plans.
Preparing
for their Summit reports, students focused on dealing with the development of
water management plans at the local level through global levels, tackling real
problems and providing real solutions. They divided into groups, with each
group presenting its well-researched plan and proposal for water conservation
and management via cogent and persuasive PowerPoint presentations. Then group
members fielded questions from fellow students regarding the validity of their
plan and proposals.
At the end
of the Summit, Ron DeMuro, AP science teacher, spun The Wheel of
Environmental Misfortune. The outcome: students were assigned problems to analyze and
suggest solutions vis a vis how a specific environmental crisis could be
addressed, using insights from their research, as well as that of fellow
students. "Less than 1% of all fresh water is readily accessible for human use
and most people will be born into countries already experiencing water
shortages," reiterated Rhonda August, AP teacher and Science Department
Chair." It is up to your generation to help solve the critical problems of
water pollution and scarcity." The students agreed and are now prepared to make
a difference locally, and, perhaps, one day, globally.

| Interpretations of the Tanakh
|
Professor
Lori Hope Lefkovitz
spoke to 12th grade Tanakh classes this week about her approach to reading the Tanakh. Professor Lefkovitz was
previously an English professor at Kenyon College and is currently on the
faculty of Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, where she founded and directs
Kolot: The Center for Jewish Women's and Gender Studies. She spoke to Barrack
students about her reading of the Book of Ruth, drawing from an essay
in her newly-published work, In Scripture: The First Stories of Jewish
Sexual Identities. The
presentation was a very interactive one, with students joining in the discussion.

Tanakh teacher Mrs. Andrea Rock, who invited Professor
Lefkovitz and has other university professors scheduled to speak later in the
trimester, notes, "It's wonderful to be able to expose our students to
fresh ways of thinking about the Tanakh, especially when the textual
interpretations are different from what their teachers may have presented in
the past. For our seniors, in particular, there is value in this taste of what
university study of our discipline can offer."

Mock Trial, A Real Success
|

"Barrack Hebrew Academy's Mock Trial team traveled to
the Montgomery County courthouse in Norristown on February 9 to argue their
cases before a jury made up of lawyers, not just average citizens," shares Ivy
Kaplan, Barrack faculty member and team advisor. The team won
both their trials and has advanced to the next round. Team members include: 9th
graders Rosie Stein, Devorah Treatman,
and Josh Horowitz. The 11th graders who participated include: Yana
List, Jordyn Horowitz, Daniel Raikin, Michael Woods, Hannah
Glickman, and Rebecca Saionz.
Due to weather conditions, the team does not know when it might compete again,
but eagerly anticipates the next Mock Trial. Many thanks are extended to Nicole
McCauley, the team's legal advisor.

For Life. Human Rights Conference
| The Human
Rights Club is busily preparing for the up coming school-wide Human Rights
Conference set for Tuesday, February 23. "Our goal is to host approximately 20
presenters who will speak from a wide variety of perspectives about human
rights issues that plague our world today," shares Devra Goldstein '12, club president.
Chad W.
Bissonette, the director and co-founder of Roots of Development, a non-profit
organization active in Haiti, will be the keynote speaker at a school-wide
assembly set for 10:45am. Mr. Bissonette recently returned from Haiti and will
have first-hand information and experiences to share about the earthquake
devastation and efforts to help the survivors.
The
keynote address will be followed by breakout sessions that students will sign
up for, depending on the topics that interest them. Students will have an
opportunity to learn about different issues in presentation form and
participate in a discussion. Guest speakers will address such topics as
immigration, domestic violence, religious persecution, the Jewish
responsibility for human rights, organ trafficking, Haiti, genocide prevention,
criminal court justice, and human rights abroad. Club members will also
lead follow-up discussions in sixth period classes.
"Human
Rights are what we as Jews are all about: looking out for one another and
helping to repair the world," adds Devra. "This conference will bring together
many Jewish values such as chesed, tikkun olam, tzedakah, and even pikuach
nefesh.
We are translating our thoughts as a school into action by educating
ourselves about local and global human rights violations."
"We invite
parents and community members to join us," comments Tom McLaughlin, club
advisor. Club members have worked very hard to assemble a roster of
distinguished presenters who are advocating for human rights across many
platforms and countries.

Bracelets to Benefit Haiti for Sale
|
Members of Barrack's Chesed
Club are selling bracelets for $3.00 each to benefit the earthquake victims of
Haiti. All proceeds will be donated to The Samuel Dalembert Foundation. Through
his work with his Foundation, Samuel Dalembert has taken great interest in
helping his devastated homeland of Haiti. Through partnerships with UNICEF, the
Red Cross, and Feed the Children Foundation, he has been able to support
numerous relief efforts, including bringing clean water and food and medical
supplies to Haiti after the earthquake. Look for Barrack students selling the
bracelets at break and at lunch. Help support this worthy cause.
