Dear Friends,
Barrack
Hebrew Academy's Informal Education Program is designed to enhance Jewish life
and traditions at our school and to foster our students' Jewish identities
through various forms of experiential programming. We focus on creating
experiences beyond the classroom, with the goal of bonding our community, sharing diverse viewpoints on what it means to be
Jewish, and instilling a pride in shared values.
One
of the highlights of our informal education program includes grade level Shabbatonim. These Shabbatonim provide each class an
opportunity to further enhance unity and relationships. Each weekend is
peppered with Shabbat celebration, delicious meals, education and social peulot (programs) and time to
relax and hang out with friends. For example, our 10th grade just
returned from a Shabbaton where programming revolved around the theme of "Israel:
Defining Your Relationship." Students had a chance to share and discuss issues
surrounding Israeli culture and society today, as well as their own views and
experiences with the country, its people and its land.
The
recently reunited 11th grade class had their Shabbaton during the end of
Chanukah at the Capital Camps and Retreat Center in Waynesboro, PA. The retreat
took place a few weeks after our Muss students returned to school, providing a
perfect opportunity for the entire class to bond again and celebrate the
Festival of Lights. "Healthy Relationships" was the educational theme, with
discussions centering on such topics as how the media influences our
definitions of relationships; how we define love; and how our Jewish identities
play a role in our relationships with others. Faculty members and Akiba-Barrack
alumni also participate in the Shabbatonim, building warm and personal
relationships among our students, teachers, and alumni.
Another
aspect of informal education at Barrack is our exciting and innovative holiday programming.
Through assemblies and special
events, we celebrate holidays as a school community. From Sukkot to Chanukah, and from Pesach to Purim, we bring
the holidays to life here at Barrack. Integral to the success of all our
programs is the leadership provided by the members of our Jewish Leadership
Initiative -JLI-an elective seminar that offers students selected for the
committee opportunities to build their leadership skills through hands-on experiences
with Jewish program planning. Students apply for JLI at the end of their junior
year and complete the program at the end of their senior year. JLI members in 2009-2010 include: Arielle Belfer, Daniel
Becker, Gabriel Duec, Benjamin Freedman, Samara Gordon, Lena Ladenheim, Jillian
Meltzer, Benjamin Miller and Erika Shaid.
It
is quite an exciting job to be part of the vibrant, flourishing, and caring
Barrack Jewish community, and I look forward to sharing more Informal Education
news with you in the future.
Sincerely,
Sarah M.
Waxman
Director
of Informal Education

Geography Bee Winner is a 6th
Grader
|
Meet Ariel Koltun-Fromm,
a Barrack 6th grade student who won the internal school Geography
Bee Competition and who is now eligible to take a test that could qualify him
to move on to the State Bee in Harrisburg. Ariel answered questions about
United States geography and cities, and about continents, historical geography
and cultural geography. When asked why he enjoyed geography, Ariel replied: "I
am interested in transportation and like to track how planes, trains and cars
travel from city to city, state to state, country to country. I also like to
study bird migration." Ariel was the winning contestant among seven
participating Barrack Middle School students. Congratulations, Ariel!

To Be or Not to Be? Creative Interpretations
|
 Students in Mrs. Rita Schuman's
12th grade English class are challenged with bringing acts from Hamlet
alive in creative ways. Two groups, each one working
collaboratively, brainstormed unique concepts. One will put Hamlet on trial in
purgatory and determine if he is guilty or innocent regarding the death of
Ophelia. The jury will consist of fellow students, teachers, and staff. The
second group will perform a mélange of musical genre matching the shifting mood
and tone of Act V. The lyrics will come from the play. Rap music will define
the grave digger's scene; operatic music will define the funeral scene; heavy
metal will define the fight scene; and country music the concluding scene. If
only the Bard of Avon could witness this event!

Relaxation Suits our Students to a "Tea"
|

To help our Middle School students handle the stress
of daily life, Mrs. Kim Gillio, Barrack Health,
Physical Education teacher and coach, is leading a Relaxation elective.
Participating students learn different ways to relax through music, art,
exercise, yoga, humor and more. They also learn about time management. Each
week concludes with a special tea party; herbal tea, of course. Alexandria
(Dria) Gutierrez '16 enjoys this elective for many
reasons: "The class has really helped me cope with some of my more challenging classes
and to manage my time more effectively. Our class is small, so we share ideas
and have developed friendships. Plus it is a relaxing way to end the day."

so many members of our community together at a sporting event in a huge arena."

and to represent our school."
