Program & Sculpture Dedication in Memory and Honor of Dr. Felix Zandman z'l: A brief program honoring the life and memory of Dr. Felix Zandman will take place at Barrack on Friday, May 24, 10am. The program will be followed by the dedication of the sculpture "Righteous Rescuers," created by Grigory Potosky, in honor of the Righteous Rescuers of Jews, 1933-45, and dedicated to the memory of Dr. Zandman. Joshua H. Landes '80, lovingly donated the sculpture to our school.
US Musical- The Sound of Music: This year's Upper School Musical, bows at St Joe's Bluett Theater, Sunday and Monday, May 26 & 27 at 3pm and on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 28 & 29 at 7:30pm. JBHA Athletic Banquet: The Athletic Banquet is set for Tuesday, June 4, 5:30pm at Barrack. Ari Roitman '94, Senior Vice President of Business for the Philadelphia Eagles, is the keynote speaker.
An Evening With Alison Klayman, June 5: Join us as Alison Klayman, award-winning filmmaker and journalist, and Akiba-Barrack alumna, Class of 2002, recounts highlights of her unanticipated career in in China and shares behind-the-scenes adventures in filming Ai Wei Wei Never Sorry, Wednesday, June 5, 7pm at Barrack. Alison will also screen clips from her her award-winning documentary that depicts the life and work of one of China's most famous artists and dissidents. Her documentary has been spotlighted at Film Festivals worldwide and has won a number of prestigious prizes. The event is FREE and open to the community. However reservations are requested. Leah Apple '09 Named a Fulbright Scholar: Congratulations to Leah Apple, Class of 2009, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, who was named a Fulbright Scholar! She will study in Taiwan in the fall.
Senior Trip: The Class of 2013 is off to the the National Museum of American Jewish History on Tuesday, April 23.
Senior Community Service: JBHA seniors have begun their Community Service programs, carrying on the Jewish tradition of tikkum olam and carrying out a prerequisite for graduation.
9th Grade Shabbaton: The 9th grade Shabbaton is set for Friday, May 3, with pickup on Saturday evening after sundown.
9th Grade Annenberg Science Symposium Assembly: Members of the 9th grade Annenberg Science Symposium Team shared the presentation they made at the Symposium in March about "Concussions and Concussion Safety" at a school-wide assembly and presented material designed to help prevent concussions to Sharon Levin, Head of School, and Kim Gillio, Athletic Director. Congratulations, team, and Rhonda August, team adviser and Science Department Chair.
A Raisin in the Sun: JBHA 7th and 8th graders enjoyed a theater trip on April 10 and saw the timeless Amercian play, A Raisin in the Sun. Look for photos and reviews in the next Benainu.
Middle School Science Field Trip: On Monday, April 29, all Middle School students are off to the Bueller Space Center for a trip that will enrich their study of Planet Space. Stay tuned for details.

8th Grade Trip to Williamsburg: Colonial history will come alive as the 8th graders travel to Williamsburg, leaving on Sunday, May 19 and returning on Thursday, May 23. No classes on Friday, May 24.
7th Grade Trip to Washington, DC: The 7th graders travel to Washington, DC on Thursday, May 23, and have no classes on Friday, May 24.

Moot Beit Din: Join us this Sunday, 9am-noon for the Moot Beit Din (Rabbinic Court.) Over 20 Jewish day schools from across North America will participate in these Mock Trials. Congratulations to HEAR Club members and adviser Senora Susan Schwartz, for presenting a moving and meaningful Yom HaShaoh program on April 8. The program featured Celina Biniaz, a Schindler's List survivor and was covered by Channel 6 and the Main Line Times.

Fashion Club Charity Fashion Event in Memory of Cheryl Dorsch, May 1: Members of Barrack's Fashion Club, advised by Wendie Sittenfield, will present a Fashion Charity event in memory of Cheryl Dorsch and benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund on Wednesday, May 1, 7pm at Barrack. The program includes a dessert reception, raffles, entertainment and Barrack students modeling the latest spring fashions from area retailers. 9th Grade Barrack Centropa Museum of Balkan Jewry, This Sunday, 4-6pm. The community is invited to the Grand Opening of this impressive school-wide exhibit that brings to life Jewish life in the Balkan countries prior to, during, and after the Holocaust. The exhibit, featuring student-created six-foot story boards and videos, will be complemented by Ladino music, light refreshments, and tours led by student docents. Join us and enjoy the work presented by our talented 9th graders. Ninth grade teachers Ivy Kaplan and Lilach Taichman are the faculty advisers behind this very significant project that commemorates and coincides with Yom HaShoah.
HEAR Assembly with Celina Biniaz, a Schindler's List Survivor: HEAR (Holocaust Education and Reflection Club) members have invited Celina Biniaz to speak at a special assembly this Monday, April 8, 9:15am in the JBHA auditorium. At 13, she was the youngest person on Oskar Schindler's life-saving list. Mrs. Biniaz never shared her story with anyone until she saw Steven Spielberg's film, Schindler's List. The film opened the door to her memory and gave her a voice, a second life. Senora Susan Schwartz is the HEAR Club adviser.
HSA Lecture on "The Adolescent Brain, Stress, and Coping Tools for Parents", April 9: JBHA parents are invited to hear Dr. Taliba Foster discuss this timely topic on Tuesday, April 9, 7pm, at the Merion Station home of Francine and Robert Lipstein. Don't miss the opportunity to unlock the mysteries of the adolescent brain and subsequent behavior.
Sign-Up for A New Melton@ Barrack Course: Do you wonder what Jewish texts teach about how to balance all of the different commitments in our lives? Melton@Barrack is offering a four part series in April, "Modern Living: Maintaining Balance," that addresses this very question. It will be taught by beloved Melton teacher Rabbi Margot Stein and is ideal for both Melton newcomers and veteran Melton learners. The four one-hour classes will be on Tuesday, April 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th, from either 10-11 am or 7:30-8:30pm. The cost for the series is $54. Israel Club "YOMS" Events: Members of Barrack's Israel Club, advised by Dr. Sigal Strauss, will present a Yom Hazikaron assembly on Monday, April 15, followed by an array of Ha'Atzmaut programs on Tuesday, April 16, featuring a special Torch Lighting Ceremony honoring community, alumni and school members who contribute to Israel in many ways. Akiba-Barrack Alumni Sports Day in Memory of Dr. Jeff Blum '7o: This very special event is set for Sunday, April 21, 1-4pm at Barrack. The program will begin with a ceremony honoring the memory of Jeff Blum, followed by sports events and activities for alumni children and grandchildren. Mike Rosen '77 is chairing the event, working with an alumni committe, as well as Sandra Steinfield, Alumni Relations Director, and Avi Katz '59, Alumni Association President. Full details to follow.

Come to the Cabaret This Sunday: Viva Las Vegas, the 19th Annual Drama Department Cabaret, bows in the Barrack auditorium this Sunday, March 10 at 7pm. Come hear the songs of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. , Bette Midler and more presented by talented cast members from this year's Upper School musical, The Sound of Music, including Ilana Goldstein, Maya Kassutto, Anna Lieberman, Leah Schatz and Becca Taichman, with Shauna Goodman and Dewey Oriente. All proceeds will go toward funding a live orchestra for The Sound of Music. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the door.
Human Rights Club Assembly Featuring Zak Ebrahim: The community is invited to the Human Rights Assembly this Wednesday, March 13, 11:45am-12:30pm in the JBHA auditorium. Travel with Zak Ebrahim on his journey as a young boy growing up in a radical household headed by his father El-Sayed Nosair, a convicted terrorist, to his coming of age as an activist for peace and justice. 7th Grade Trip, March 11: JBHA 7th graders are off to the Constitution Center for an all-day trip on Monday, March 1 that will enrich their classroom learning.
In preparation for Yom HaShoah: The USA Network will show Schindler's List, the movie, on Saturday evening, Feb 23 at 8pm. The movie can be recorded and watched at a later date and time in preparation for the JBHA HEAR (Holocaust Education and Reflection) Club's Yom HaShoah program that will feature a Schindler's List survivor. The HEAR Club program will take place after the Passover break. Senora Susan Schwartz is the club's adviser.
Shushan Purim: Chag Sameach! And get ready to celebrate Purim in style this Monday, Feb. 25, with costume contests, student-made videos, games and more. The program, designed and implemented by JLI members, promises to be festive and fun. Rabbi Lauren Brody-Hyett is the JLI adviser.
Israel Club Lunch 'n Learn with IDF SGT. Benjamin Anthony, Feb. 26: An International speaker, Israel activist, and founder of "Our Soldiers Speak," IDF Sergeant Benjamin Anthony will be the special guest speaker at the Israel Club's Lunch'n Learn on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 12:10-12:55pm in Room 206. Winter Sports Assembly: The Winter Sports Assembly is set for Wednesday, Feb. 27 in the Batoff Family Dining Commons. The program begins at 11:50am and carries through to 12:30pm. Lunch will then take place in the gym, at 12:30pm. Congratulations, JBHA Athletes and coaches. Coaches will collect uniforms.
Jewish Day School Second Annual Middle School Basketball Playoffs: One again, the Middle School basketball girls' and boys' teams from Barrack Hebrew Academy, the Robert Saligman Middle School, the Kellman Brown Academy and Torah Academy will compete in the Jewish Day School Middle School Basketball Playoffs, with the championship games played at Barrack on Thursday, February 28. The Girls' game at 4pm will be followed by the Boys' game at 5:15. We thank the Kohelet Foundation for sponsoring the playoffs. The winning teams will receive the coveted Elijah's Cup. The community is invited to cheer on the teams!
Athlete of the Week: Congratulations to Ari Cooper '17, an outstanding member fo the JBHA co-ed Swim team wo was named Athlete of the Week. Congratulations, as well, to the student atheltes who received honorable mention: Caroline Batoff '13, Girls' Varsity Basketball; Mia Stein '16, Girls' Junior Varsity Basketball; Michael Zlotnik'15, Boys' Varsity Basketball; and Josh Jutcovich'16, Boys' Junior Varsity Basketball.
Human Rights Club Book Drive: Members of JBHA's Human Rights Club are collecting books that will be donated to prisoners through the Books Through Bars program. Books in demand are dictionaries, GED and ESL study guides, contemporary high school text books in all subjects, Mexican and Puerto Rican history and paperback fiction, books in Spanish, African American history and paperback novels, spirituality, yoga and meditation books. The book drive is on now and continues through Wednesday, March 6. No hard back fiction books, please. The collection box is near Mrs. Underwood's desk.
Kudos to the Cancer Club & Participating Students: A number of students had their hair cut to be donated to Pantene's Lengths Drive that transforms the hair into wigs for cancer survivors. The wigs are donated. The Club also raised close to $400 to support this worthy cause. Look for photos and details in next week's issue of Benainu.
Cougar Chronicle Purim Edition: Congratulations to the staff of The Cougar Chronicle for another witty Purim edition of the paper. Judy Pransky is the paper's adviser.

Cancer Club Awareness Hair Donations Event, Feb. 11; Members of the Cancer Club have invited a professional hair stylists to cut and collect hair for the Pantene Lengths program that makes wigs and donates them to cancer patients. The event is set for Monday, Feb. 11 at noon in room 112. Cash donations are also being collected for the program. A donation box is located on Mrs. Underwood's desk.
HEAR Club Special Speaker, Feb. 8: Members of the HEAR (Holocaust Education and Reflection) Club have invited TV personality and Jewish educator Rhonda Fink-Whitman to discuss her moving novel, 94 Maidens, at a special Lunch and Learn on Friday, Feb. 9 in room 112. The novel, based on true events, traces the lives of 94 school girls, ages 14-22, who are in the hands of their Nazi captors in 1942 occupied Poland. Her mother was one of the 94 maidens. The book also relates the story of a Jewish family caught in a perilous cat and mouse game with the Nazis in occupied Berlin. Parents, faculty and students are invited to this riveting and important program.

National Geographic Geography Bee: The Geography Bee is set for Tuesday, Jan. 8. All interested Middle School students should let their Core teachers know that they would like to participate in this annual event.
Chesed Trip: All Middle School students will participate in this Community Service day set for Friday, January 11. They will visit three schools, helping pre-school and elementary school children. One of these schools desperately needs glue sticks, tape, pens, pencils and gently used winter coats, hats and gloves. Please consider donating theses items that can be dropped off in Mrs. Farrell's office.
Shabbaton: The Middle School Shabbaton is set for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11 and 12. Plan to celebrate Shabbat with fellow classmates, faculty, and JLI members advised by Rabbi Lauren Brody Hyett.
Talent Show: Calling all Middle School students. Get ready to participate in this lively talent show on Tuesday, Jan. 29. JBHA Basketball Team Updates: Great activity by our Lady Cougars on the court! The Girls Varsity Team defeated Delaware Valley by a score of 36-23. The Middle School Lady Cougars came out strong and defeated Abrams, 30-7. The Boys' Jr. Varsity Basketball Team lost a close game to Germantown Friends by a score of 47-44. The Boys' Middle School Team lost in overtime to Abrams by a score of 40-35. The Boys' Varsity Team, disadvantaged by the absence of three senior players, lost to Germantown Friends, 55-18. Look for more action on the courts next week.
Picture Day for Muss Students and... Smile! Muss students will have their photos taken on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and a group photo will be taken of the entire 11th grade.

D'Var Torah presented by Aaron Schapira '14: In the parsha of Chayei Sarah, Abraham attempts to find a wife for Issac, his son. Abraham assigns his servant, Eliezer, to this effort. Eliezer is dependent upon Abraham for his livelihood since Abraham is Eliezer’s source of income. As a result of this, it is crucial for Eliezer to complete his assigned mission promptly and efficiently. However, this is not what Eliezer does. Immediately upon arriving in Aram Naharaim, Eliezer locates a well for his camels to drink from. In other words, Eliezer’s first priority is taking care of his animals. This is true despite the fact that he has not yet completed the task which ensures his own income. This act is truly selfless, since it demonstrates that Eliezer cares more about the comfort of his camels than about his own income and wellbeing. This thoughtful act should speak to everyone about the importance of considering others prior to considering oneself.
As part of the student population, we feel a responsibility to help one another in the same manner that Eliezer felt an obligation to help his animals. Whether it's introducing oneself to a new student or returning a lost binder, we can all take a break from our assigned school tasks in order to improve someone else's day. It is these types of actions which ensure that our community remains a Barrack community.
Student Athlete of the Week: Congratulations to Evan Benedict '13, an outstanding member of the Boys' Varsity Soccer Team, our Athlete of the Week. Coach Kleger and Coach Benek report that Evan has been one of the top goalkeepers in the Tri-County League since his freshman year when the Cougars won the championship with him in net. This past week, Evan demonstrated his offensive skills, scoring twice in a thrilling come from behind quarter final win over Perkiomen. In the final game of the season against Kohelet, Evan provided half the team's offense with a hat trick ( 3 goals.) He represented Barrack in the All Star Game this week and scored two goals in that game. Evan was also selected to the TCISL all-league team for the goalie position. He plans to follow his siblings and take his skills to the University of Delaware next year. Congratulations, Evan!
