Going into the game on Thursday, Lady Cougars were determined. Having played an incredibly tough game last week against Delaware Valley Friends and falling short, we were ready to conquer. Del Val struck first, but the Cougars did not get discouraged. We continued to play our hearts out and had many scoring opportunities with the hopes of tying the game.
After minutes of heated play, the ball rolled out by the goalie's net and the Cougars were awarded a corner. Sarah Gordon set herself up to take the kick. She was determined to send that ball into the 18 for a teammate to make a quick tap into the net, however the ball was received by a a Del Val player who headed it right over the goalie's head and into the net. Our team rejoiced. We had tied the game and shifted the momentum; we were ready to attack. The half ended with the Cougar's playing at the top of our game. At halftime we kept our minds and energies focused and prepared to play another 40 minutes.
The second half was started and much of it went by without any goals by either team. The Cougars game close many times but just fell short. Thankfully, Lindsay Chevlin reentered the game after an early injury and was unyielding in her desire to put the team on top with a second goal. After many opportunities she skimmed one right by the goalie and the team cheered thunderously. Del Val put up a good fight but they were no match for the Cougars and our amazing goalie today, Sarah Nelson. Sarah played superbly in the net stopping some very difficult shots including a few breakaways. The whole team worked together and played some breathtaking soccer. With a 2-1 victory we look forward to facing Del Val in the first round of the playoffs next week.
