The Magic Pot

By Lindsay P.

Jack was so fond of the Greek way of life, he had everything Greek that he could get his hands on. One day Jack found an ancient Greek pot in an antique shop and immediately bought it. He figured that the picture of the pot was showing how the Greeks fed their horses.

A few days after he bought the pot, he dreamt that the man in the picture came to life. In his dream, he woke up and didn’t believe what happened, so he started to ask many questions.

The man’s name was Lykos, which means “wolf”. He was going to be the king when his father died. He enjoyed fighting, he liked to go hunting, and he also liked using chariots. He was from Athens and his father was the king, his mother the queen, his brother was an athlete, one of his sister was engaged to a prince from another city-state, and his other sister was engaged to a general in the army. He enjoyed watching the Olympics and was engaged to a princess.

He said that the pot was made for him, and was lost when Athens was attacked by Sparta. He told Jack that Athens was attacked in 490 B.C.E. and he was 16 at the time. The pot told the story about Lykos feeding his horse before he was going out on a hunt. Later, Lykos told Jack about the Olympics and how last year Lykos’ brother Vasilios, which means with royal blood or regal, had won first place in wrestling.

After Lykos had answered all of Jack’s questions, Jack woke up. He looked at the pot and began talking to it, asking Lykos questions, but there was no response. Jack wondered if he would get to talk to Lykos ever again.

Would he?
