The Legend of Domini

By Dobhran

I am the maker of a pot, also known as a potter. This pot is special because I made it as a memorial to my friend. His name is, or should I say was, Domini, and this is his story. Read this carefully.

Domini had always wanted to be a part of the Greek army. He was now sailing between Athens and Sparta. He was on the verge of fighting in a huge war and he was not that sure he wanted to. Being in the war with Sparta did not seem like the place he should be. It was not that he was scared. An Athenian soldier of his stature would never be afraid.

As he stared out towards the Spartan fleet, he thought of the battle that was to come. Life could be so fleeting so that it was there and then gone. That seemed to be the life for him. Everyone had always told him that he could never wait for anything to happen and that if he ever wanted anything to happen he had to do it himself.

Marth was a Spartan war leader and proud of it. He was to enter in a small part of Sparta's conquest. The Athenian war fleet was good but not that good. Marth thought that the Athenian war fleet was not good enough to be known and feared by everyone.

In this war we will definitely win, he thought. Although the Athenians have the better fleet, we have the better army. And without an army, what is a fleet? With a superior army, we will win. And anyway, what could go wrong?

The ships were close together now. The Athenians got ready to board the Spartan ship and the Spartans got ready to be boarded. With a cry, the board was lowered! It fell onto the deck with a thump. The Athenians rushed over onto the Spartan ship with a mighty war cry. In the lead was Domini with war spear in hand.

The Spartans rushed up to meet the yelling Athenians. Marth, sword in hand, rushed up to block Domini's path. On the deck, Domini faced off with Marth, Domini with spear and Marth with sword. They circled each other in a dance of death. Domini then struck down Marth in a flurry of blows. Domini stood over the prone man preparing to finish him off.

The man under Domini was muttering for the help of god. It was almost funny how someone would pray to god at a time like this.

Then a winged god swooped down and said: "If you kill this man I will kill you."

Domini thought about what the god had said. He thought to walk away would be cowardly and he would die anyway. To die at a god's hands would be a noble way to die, and to take the man to the next world with him would be good. Domini plunged his spear into Marth's chest and the winged god plunged his spear into Domini.

This legend will be told and retold as if Domini had never died.
