Florence Melton Mini School @ Barrack

Life-Long Learning in Action; Register Today

The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School provides a comprehensive program of adult Jewish text study developed at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Small, pluralistic groups of learners and a dynamic faculty together explore a range of texts that elucidate central questions of Jewish history and life today. The cornerstone of the program is the Core curriculum, which consists of four courses taught over two years. Graduates of the program participate in "Scholars" classes, which examine selected biblical texts and contemporary issues in greater depth.

Core Program First Year:

  • Rhythms of Jewish Living - the ideas, beliefs and practices that shape Jewish life and the Jewish calendar.
  • Purposes of Jewish Living - the underlying reasons that Judaism has developed as it has over time.

Core Program Second Year:

  • Ethics of Jewish Living - the textual bases of Jewish decision-making about issues such as justice, the sanctity of life and death, sexuality and community.
  • Dramas of Jewish Living - critical moments shaping Jewish history from the biblical period through the present.

Barrack Hebrew Academy is thrilled to host this new site for this internationally-acclaimed adult Jewish literary program!

Core classes will begin in the Fall of 2012 and continue through May, 2013.
Scholars’ classes will meet for ten weeks in the Fall of 2012 and Spring of 2013 semesters.

The following classes are now forming: Core program (first year): Tuesdays (12-2pm) or Wednesdays (7-9pm).

Fall Scholars classes:

  • Israeli Literature as a Window to Israeli Society - Wednesdays 10-11:30am.
  • Beyond Borders: The History of the Arab Israeli Conflict - Wednesdays 7:30-9pm.
