The Arts

Music

Barrack students interested in music, whether instrumental or vocal, have a wide array of opportunities to take part in JBHA's newly established music program. Within their first year of existence, the ensembles participated in over 14 performances ranging in venues from school events, area synagogues, and Philadelphia sporting events such as the 76ers and Phillies.

The vocal and instrumental ensembles for Middle and Upper school students perform in a number of styles ranging from traditional Hebrew songs, contemporary a cappella works, jazz and classical works.

Under the direction of Dr. Karin Orenstein, a noted pianist, performer and educator who was recently awarded a teaching grant from the Philadelphia Orchestra, students have the opportunity to develop both personal as well as ensemble skills on a variety of levels. While students develop the musical skills necessary to participate in top notch ensembles, they are also provided with many musical elective options, including courses such as The History of Western Music, The History of Jazz and Rock n Roll, Songwriting and World Music. Students take part in class discussions and debates, write their own musical soundtracks, enjoy trips to the Philadelphia Orchestra and much, much more.
