Science

Curiosity! Questions! Observations! Experimentation! Discovery!

These are all key components that create a foundation of excellence in Barrack Hebrew Academy's Upper School science curriculum that integrates math, technology, and ideas based in history and Jewish ethics into scientific inquiry.

All Upper School students take Biology in 9th grade; Chemistry in 10th grade; and Physics in 11th grade. In 12th grade, students may choose among AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, Astronomy and An Introduction to Engineering.

No matter their grade, however, all Barrack students are motivated to view science as a struggle among ideas. Our goal is to challenge our students with problem-solving projects and activities. Barrack students are motivated to expand their critical and creative thinking skills by understanding the process of science. Our students actively engage in field work and use up-to-date laboratory methodologies that help them explore the phenomena of the world around them. They conduct water and soil experiments on campus, design pinball machines, identify fragments of DNA molecules, and design and build their own musical instruments. Our final objective is to educate our students to be scientifically-literate citizens of the world.

Students also participate in enrichment activities, continuing their fascination with science. Activities include the Annenberg Science Symposium, the Engineering Club, the Environmental Action Club, Future Doctors of America, JETS ( Junior Engineering Technical Society) and the Science Olympiad.
