I.              Read pages 70-71 in History of Western Society (Chapter 3, "The Classical Period" and "The Persian Wars")

II.              Answer the following questions:

A)              Identify the following key people and events of the Persian War.

                 1)  Darius I

                 2)  Marathon

                 3)  Xerxes

                 4)  Thermopylae

                 5)  Salamis

B)              Be prepared to discuss the significance of the victory over Persia.

Assignment 2     

I.              Read pages 51-53 in your Photocopy

II.              Answer the following questions:

1)              What reforms did Pericles institute in Athenian democracy?

2)              What effects did these reforms have?

3)              How democratic was Athens in the 4th century?  (Include the                                                     strength of the aristocracy in your answer.)  

4)              Your reading states, “Historians have lauded him (Pericles) more                                                    highly than any other statesman in antiquity...”  As we progress                                                      through this unit, take notes assessing Pericles as a statesman.

READ pages 86-9 in HWS.  Answer the following questions:

1. Why was Philip of Macedonia a successful conqueror and ruler? List at least 3 reasons.

2. In your opinion, what is the most significant reason why the Greek city-states lost their independence?  Why?
