Tanakh 11-2  - Ketuvim

B’ruchim Habaim!  Welcome to eleventh grade Tanakh.  I’m looking forward to a great semester – as together we explore a unique part of the Tanakh – Ketuvim.

In this class we’ll look at several books of the Ketuvim, including Megillat Esther, Sefer Tehillim, Shir HaShirim, Mishlei and Kohelet. We’ll be looking at the different types of Biblical literature included in this section of the Tanakh, studying both form and content, as well as exploring the place of these books in our sacred traditions.  We’ll look to ascertain the overarching themes and messages of the texts, distill the theological truths they seek to impart, and most importantly see how they relate to our development as modern Jews.

Of course in order to appreciate any great work of literature, one must read it in the original.  How much moreso the Tanakh!  Therefore we will be studying these texts primarily b’Ivrit, and we’ll work at further developing skills relating to Biblical Hebrew.  We’ll be asking the Biblical text many questions, and will use both classical Hebrew meforshim and modern commentaries in our quest for answers. Hopefully we’ll come up with our own share of unique and individual answers as well.
