 Assignment 1:   (Due 9/9) Current Event on American Foreign Policy.  Write a brief summary of the article and explain how it relates to Zakaria’s analysis.  Summer Reading questions will also be collected.

             

A. Imperialism

1. European Imperialism

IN CLASS: Objectives of a Nation's Foreign Policy

Assignment 2: (Due 9/11) READ in Sources of Western Tradition, Introduction to Chapter 9 “European Imperialism.”   List the political, economic, and ideological motivations/justifications for imperialism.

IN CLASS: Symposium on Imperialism.  Bring Sources of Western Tradition to Class.

 

2. American Imperialism

Assignment 2: (Due 9/16) READ in Brinkley, Chapter. 20 "Stirrings of Imperialism" to "The Open Door" and Time Magazine article "Birth of a Superpower" (attached).  ANSWER in your own words:

  1. From the early 1800s to the early 1900s, America's foreign policy changed from isolationism to imperialism.  List and describe examples that prove this to be so.

IN CLASS: Read and Discuss the Monroe Doctrine (photocopy).

 

IN CLASS: Map of Imperialism at High Tide (Brinkley chap. 20).

  • What regions show the most colonial activity?  Why?
  • What countries are most imperial? Why?
  • How does the US rank as an imperial power? Why?

B. Progressivism

Assignment 4: (Due 9/23) READ in Brinkley Chap. 21 “The Progressive Impulse” to “The Social Gospel” and “The Assault on the Parties” to the end of the chapter.  AND Chap. 22 “Theodore Roosevelt and the Modern Presidency” to “The Big Stick.”  AND article from Time Magazine “Fighting the Fat Cats” (see attached).  ANSWER the following in your own words:

  • What were TR’s assumptions about the proper role of government?  Give two examples to illustrate his philosophy.
  • Identify and explain four “reform impulses” associated with progressivism.
  • How did the muckrakers help prepare the way for progressivism?  Give specific examples.
  • Why did the political parties become a target for progressive reformers?  How did the progressives attempt to reduce the role of the parties, especially on a local and state level?
  • How did the following reflect the reform impulses associated with progressivism?
    • Labor reform
    • NAACP
    • Temperance reform
    • Immigration reform/restriction
  • How do you account for the growth of socialism during the Progressive Era?

Assignment 5 (see also attached sheet): Due 9/25  Immigration and Jewish Progressivism.  Read the following sources in JITMW as well as the attached document by Lilian Wald.  Take notes on the following aspects of each of the three documents: Bias, Evidence, Author, Date, Style.
