For Thursday, May 22, 2008-

1) Read Bamidbar 16:1-14, and make a list of all unfamiliar words along with their dictionary definitions.
2) Answer the questions: "Why did Korach and his companions revolt?" "Against whom were they complaining?" (all responses should be on a separate page)

For Tuesday, May 20, 2008- answer question #1 on "Shiv'ah Shiv'ei Torah?" handout

For Wednesday, May 14, 2008- answer questions #6 & #7 on page two of Nazir handout

For Friday, May 9, 2008- read Bamidbar Ch. 6:1-11; identify all difficult words, and write them down along with their dictionary definitions (on a separate page)

For Tuesday, March 25, 2008- answer both questions on page 2 of "What is the meaning of Kadosh" worksheet (on a separate page).

For Friday, March 14, 2008- answer questions from handout "The Introduction to "Holiness" on a separate page.

For Tuesday, March 4, 2008- read "Rambam on Sacrifices" handout, and answer all questions (you can skip question #2 on the first page)

For Tuesday, February 26, 2008- read Shmot 32:1-6 and the commentary of Rashi on verse 1.  Answer the following questions:  a) Why (according to Rashi) did the people not know what happened to Moshe?   b) What was the purpose of the calf- what function did it serve, and what did the people think of it?  (you can find Rashi's commentary here)

For Tuesday, February 5, 2008- read two page handout by Nechama Leibowitz on "Don't Covet"; write 1 page explaining the view of Rambam, and the criticism of the Sefer Mitzvot Gadol.

For Wednesday, January 30, 2008- answer question #1 on double-sided worksheet "Why Do We List the Ten Commandments As We Do?" (1/2 page)

For Friday, January 18, 2008- complete worksheet on "Anochi Hashem Elohecha - a Mitzvah?"

For Thursday, January 10, 2008- make a list of the Aserot haDibrot, relying solely upon the parasha divisions that appear in the text of a Sefer Torah (each parasha should indicate a new statement/commandment)

For Tuesday, January 2, 2008- read Shmot Ch. 19;

1) write out on a separate page all words you do not know, and look up (and write down) their translation;

2) "prepare" the text according to the way we discussed in class (breakdown into sections with titles)

For Monday, December 17, 2007- read Shmot 16 - 17:7, and chart out: 1) the places Bnei Yisrael travel to;  2) the situation when they get there;  3) what Bnei Yisrael do; and  4) the reaction of Moshe and/or Hashem.

For Friday, December 14, 2007- read Shmot 15:22-27, and answers questions on handout (you do not need to answer question #2)

For Monday, December 3, 2007- recording of Shmot Ch. 20 is due; you should read the chapter clearly and carefully, and record it onto a CD, removable hard drive, etc. (i.e. in a digital format) (you may also email it to me)

For Friday, November 30, 2007- read Shmot 12:1-13, which describes a certain ritual - 1) what is the name of this ritual (hint: one of the psukim tells us);  2) what is the reason for this ritual? and  3) [based upon your answer to question #2] is this ritual meant to be observed throughout the generations, or was it a one-time event?

For Tuesday, November 13, 2007- complete the third (and last) column of the Vocabulary sheet for Shmot Chs. 2 & 3 (see below for the handout)

For Monday, November 12, 2007-

1. Read through Shmot 7:15 - 8:15 (a description of the 1st three plagues);  List each of the plagues, and state whether there is a warning that precedes it
2. How do these plagues impact (negatively!) the Egyptians? What aspect of the Egyptians' lives and/or spiritual beliefs do these plagues affect?
3. What seems to be the purpose of G-d bringing these plagues upon the Egyptians? (see Shmot 5:2)

For Tuesday, October 30, 2007- complete the second column of the Vocabulary sheet for Shmot Chs. 2 & 3 (see below for the handout)

For Thursday, October 25, 2007- complete the first column (on the right!) of the Vocabulary sheet for Shmot Chs. 2 & 3

For Thursday, October 18, 2007- Read Shmot Ch. 2 (you do NOT need to prepare it according to the instructions we discussed in class); answer the following questions:

1) What is the 'Jewish response' to Paroh's attempts to murder the male Jewish children? See Rashi on verse 1.  You can find the text of Rashi with a vocabulary list here

2) What is their 'response' to Paroh's attempt to oppress them with hard labor? See vv. 23-25

For Wednesday, October 17, 2007- Complete Vocabulary sheet for Shmot Ch. 1

For Friday, October 12, 2007- Read Ramban's Introduction to Sefer Shmot.  Write an answer to the following question: "According to Ramban, what is the main theme of Sefer Shmot?" Ramban's Introduction in Hebrew (some words translated) is here.

For Monday, October 8, 2007: Read sources referenced on Handout "Introduction to Shmot" and answer all questions.

For Thursday, September 20, 2007: Answer questions on handout "Additional Sources" using the sources from Mishnah Yoma (R. Eliezer) which we discussed in class, as well as from Rav Soloveitchik & the Kli Yakar which can be found here.

For Monday, September 10, 2007: Answer questions #1-4 on handout "Questions for Study of Rosh haShanah - Sources in Tanakh"

For Friday, September 7, 2007:  Read Vayikra 23:23-25 and Bamidbar 29:1-6.    Explain what holiday these passages refer to, and how each passage describes the holiday [write the Hebrew terms that the Tanakh uses] (1/2 page for each passage)
