Jewish Studies 8-2

Week of October 22

We have started on our first Mishnah - so far the studnets seem on top of the material. As we finish each Mishnah, I am giving them the background to the Mishnah itself - this week we are focusing on the conflict between the Pharisees and the Saduccees.

Later this week I will begin to introduce a series of short units covering various areas of Jewish tradition.

Homework Due 10/24: They will have a worksheet that they will use to read a current events article in a critical manner.  There are two goals: To learn more about the events affecting the Jewish world, and, to become better critical readers. Below are links to online publications the students can use for their articles.

Week of October 15

Between Chagim and power failures we are managing to get started with our curriculum.

We are presently reading the verses of the Torah (Deuteronomy 21:18-21) which describes the case of the stubborn and rebellious son. These verses present many challenging problems and before we study the Mishnah on this topic, we are studying them in depth based on priciples we have studied earlier. Their present task (and homework), is to come up with at least 10 questions they haave about the text. Only then will we start our sudy of the Mishnah. As we study the Mishnah I will be filling in the background and context within which it was redacted.

Please feel free to read the text and engage your child in discussion - I think it is pretty provocative and interesting material.
