Jewish Studies/Talmud 12-2 (Mr. Elisha Stein)

This course will explore the concept of Shabbat through study of the writings of chazal, principally Mesechet Shabbat. We will divide our time between skills-building (to improve our ability to become independent learners of Talmud) and addressing substantive issues about the nature of Shabbat as seen through the eyes of the Tannaim and the Amoraim. With regard to the latter goal, we will focus on several melachot (prohibited labors) - tying, writing & carrying - and ask what these can teach us about the essence of the most sacred day on the Jewish calendar.
