philosophies of the Enlightenment. Also, what is the purpose of his “Eating Fish” section?
For Fri. 12/19 Read pp. 8-9 – Thomas Paine. What argumentative technique does he
use? To whom is he trying to appeal? What is “summer solider” and “sunshine patriot”?
For Mon. 12/22 Please note: you have English D7 instead of Israel class (room 056)
Read pp. 33-42 – “Rappaccini’s Daughter,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Although this story takes place far from Puritan New England, what are the similarities between the stories?
(in class Jan. 5 and Jan. 6 – we introduce Romanticism and Transcendentalism and finish Hawthorne)
For Wed. 1/7 Read Emerson, pp. 16-19 – Emerson is known as the Father of American Transcendentalism – how is that moniker evident in your reading of “Self-Reliance”?
For Thu. 1/8 Read Thoreau, pp. 20-25 only – Thoreau studied at Emerson’s feet; in fact, he lived with the Emersons and fell in love with Emerson’s (un-reciprocating) wife. How is Thoreau’s writing similar to Emerson’s? How is it different? How is it reflective of the tenets of Romanticism, particularly Transcendentalism?

For Tue. 1/13 Read Poe, pp. 43-51. Poe is known as one of the “brooding Romantics.” Specifically, how is that evidenced by this story? If Thoreau used imagination to invoke beauty, what does the imagination of Poe’s narrator invoke? Be aware of all the twists and turns of this operatic story!
For Thu. 1/15 Read Melville, pp. 52-56 only
By 8 AM on Tue. 1/20 E-mail me the final draft (125 points) of your paper by 8am on Tuesday 1/20. Then, bring the rough draft, with my comments, to me at any point during this week.

IN-CLASS: In addition to the above assignments, we will attempt to cover the entire packet in
class, or at least the highlights. We will explore Walt Whitman in the final week of the course, as
well as more Thoreau and more Melville during the previous weeks. Also, we will introduce all
major concepts during class time. Take diligent notes and try not to miss any classes.
