Two Novels:
Ordinary People, by Judith Guest and
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon
A. As you read, highlight or mark passages that relate to the following questions and be prepared to write about them in class.
For Ordinary People – How do Conrad’s peers or siblings influence him? How do the following characters aid Conrad in his recovery: Dr. Berger, Calvin, Jeannine?
For The Curious Incident – In what sections of the book is Christopher able to show some self-control and restraint, as compared to other sections? Why do you think he is able to restrain himself at some times and not others?
B. Comparison and Contrast Assignment:
- Prewriting chart – Create a chart comparing and contrasting Christopher and Conrad. Here are some topics to consider: relationships with family and peers; exercising control over their lives; self-image; goals; fears. The chart may be hand-written or typed.
- Short paper – Type a 1 ½ -page paper comparing and contrasting Conrad and Christopher.
Both chart and paper are due the first day of class. Also, please bring both novels
